Angelo Caroselli was born in Rome and, according to Baldinucci, had an encounter with Caravaggio, before the Lombard artist fled the city in 1606, that may have encouraged his decision to become a painter. Painting appears to be a discipline in which Caroselli was entirely self-taught.
Well into the 1620s, Caroselli’s works were greatly influenced by the revolutionary tenebrism and realism of Caravaggio, but later, like other followers of Caravaggio, Caroselli moved away from Caravaggism. His surviving oeuvre is small, and most of these works were painted for private patrons.
